7 Closet Essentials

With back-to-school shopping (and tax-free weekend) coming up, I think it’s important to put more effort into searching for basics that you love and fit you well, because these few items will be the foundation of your closet. Though some of these pieces might seem simple or boring, they will be the must-haves you mix and build on – no matter the season or trend. Below are seven of my key essentials:
Closet Essentials

1. White Tee Madewell V-Neck Pocket Tee, $19.50
Plain white shirts are the perfect canvas to start with. Whether loosely tucked into jeans or layered under a statement necklace, stocking up on your favorite white t-shirt is a must. Some things to think about are the cut (crew vs. v-neck), weight (light vs. heavy), and structure (fitted vs. loose). Find one that’s most flattering and comfortable for you. I like mine loose, but not shapeless for the perfect amount of slouchy structure that’s lightweight and slightly sheer.

2. Little Black Dress Topshop Textured Mesh Panel Dress, $20
a.k.a the “LBD”, everyone knows a little black dress is must in every girl’s closet. A simple one can be worn under a blazer for a presentation or meeting, dressed up with heels and jewels for a night out, or even dressed down but still polished with simple flats and a cardigan. It’s flattering and very versatile.

3. Nude Cami Forever 21 Essential Layering Tank, $1.80
The answer to everything! I like this one, because it matches my skin color exactly*. Wear one under whites, sheers, really anything. And at this price, you can stock up on them. I have at least four or five.

4. Dark Wash Skinnies J Brand Mid-Rise Capri, $187
Your favorite pair of dark wash skinny jeans will take you everywhere. You can dress them up or down, as long as you take the time to make sure they’re comfortable and hemmed properly. Personally, I think investing in a quality pair that is on the pricier end is ok, because the quality and amount of times you wear them will justify the price. I’m quite short, so I like buying skinny jeans that are labeled as “capri” so I don’t need to hem them. Usually, they fit perfectly.

5. Printed Scarf DailyLook Polka Dot Stripe Scarf, $14.99 (also comes in more colors)
Scarves are functional and the simplest way to change up a look by adding color and texture. I like multi-colored, multi-patterned ones to coordinate with different outfits.

6. Blazer Zara Basic Blazer, $79.90
A perfectly-tailored blazer is the easiest thing to throw on and look polished. It works over dresses, blouses, even t-shirts.

7. Red Flats J. Crew Classic Patent Ballet Flats, $89.99
Though many say black flats are a must-have, I believe red flats work just as well. They can be work all seasons and add the perfect pop of color – just like your favorite classic red lip.

*Funny story…I’ve actually been stopped for wearing this cami before. It matches my skin color so well, people thought I was wearing nothing inside my sheer shirt.

What are your closet must-haves?
