Most might say Austin is a great city to live in. “It’s vibrant. There are so many job opportunities. There are so many fun things to do outside!” I’ve been living in Austin for almost seven years. While those things are true, one of my favorites things about living in the city is the proximity to surrounding towns like Round Top, Texas.
Just a 1.5-hour drive away outside Austin, Round Top is a quaint town known for its vintage shops and antique finds. Fun fact: the city’s population is approximately 85 people. I recently took the opportunity to go to Round Top and stay at The Frenchie Hotel with friends to explore the town and get a change of scenery with work.
Where to Stay in Round Top, Texas
The Frenchie Hotel was my first choice for a place to stay in Round Top. The property is beautifully decorated with colorful rooms and modern amenities. It’s also walking distance from the town’s main square full of quaint shops and restaurants.
I was placed in one of the Bungalows 11-13 overlooking the green pastures and gorgeous pool. Each Pool Bungalow housed a king-sized bed, mini bar area, walk-in shower, and luxurious round, free-standing tub—my favorite part of the room. Every morning, it felt glorious to open the curtains and see the view of the pastures and pool. I couldn’t resist taking my work to the pool just so I could spend extra time there.
Guests in all rooms also have access to the Main House, a beautiful communal space with a large kitchen and multiple indoor/outdoor areas to eat, work, or relax. I happened to bring food, snacks, and wine from home, so the commercial-sized fridge in the house was a great place to store everything.
With small towns, good phone service and WiFi can be a bit unreliable. Depending on your trip, you may not feel the need to have either. I brought some social media work with me during my stay, so the WiFi at The Frenchie was very much appreciated. Scroll below for a few more pictures of the property!
What to Do Near The Frenchie Hotel
The Frenchie is situated within walking distance of the quaint town square. There are wonderful shops there from vintage stores to coffee shops to restaurants. A few of our favorites during the trip were Royer’s Pie Haven for vast options of sweet and savory pies, Round Top Coffee Shop for breakfast tacos, and Teague’s Tavern for very kind and service. One evening, we also ventured off to JW’s Steakhouse, a family-friendly restaurant for a delicious meal in Carmine, Texas. Neon Moon Coffee was also a lovely stop for coffee just a 15-minute drive away from the property
If you’re an avid home decorator or antique lover, you’ll also love all the vintage shops around. There were many establishments off the sides of the main road that specialized in very specific finds from road signs to woodwork. I live in a small apartment without much space to add anything more, but maybe next time!
Recommendations for Your Trip
I highly recommend reaching out to The Frenchie before your stay to inquire about rooms they recommend for your needs. This property is great for a variety of trips from small business retreats, family retreats or reunions, a getaway with girlfriends, or a couple’s weekend away, so they’ll be able to tell you what might be best for you.
If you’re hoping to go on a weekday, plan ahead. Many small businesses are only open later in the work week and on the weekends, so be sure to take a look before you go and plan for what you want to see. The Frenchie staff was very communicative and accommodating throughout my stay, and they recommended some great spots that were open during my weekday stay.
Lastly, head to the store before your trip and bring lots of snacks! The communal kitchen is a great space to cook your own meals or arrange your own grazing board. I really enjoyed the quiet time eating around the Main House and looking at the view outside.
